"He wanted to record it just in case," said Lori Jo Hoekstra, the comedian's friend and producer.
“Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special,” the late “Saturday Night Live” alum's final stand-up special, will be released on Netflix on May 30.
He was diagnosed with cancer nearly a decade ago but kept it hidden. He died at 61 on Sept. 14, 2021.
Macdonald was working on the material in mid-2020, according to producer Lori Jo Hoekstra.
“His test results were not good, so he wanted to get this on tape just in case — as he put it— things went south,” Hoekstra told The Hollywood Reporter.
“He wanted something special to share if anything happened.”
Macdonald lived another year. Then in August 2021, he fell ill and died the following month.
