If Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter goes through later this year, he will reinstate Trump's account.
The permaban would be lifted, Musk said in a live interview with the Financial Times on Tuesday. "No permabans."
He also called Twitter's initial decision to ban Trump in January 2021 "morally wrong and extremely foolish."
After the attempted insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, Twitter banned Trump's account "due to the risk of further incitement of violence."
"I believe permabans fundamentally undermine trust in Twitter as a public forum," he said.
"Bad tweets should be deleted or made invisible, and a temporary suspension is appropriate."
"The ban didn't silence Trump," he said. "It boosted the right. That's why it's morally wrong and stupid."
